Lopez, Gregory
(1611–91)
   Bishop.
   Lopez was born A-Lou in Fogan, China. He was converted to Christianity and in 1651 he joined the Dominican Order. In 1656, under his new name, he was ordained a priest and in 1690 he became the first native Chinese to be consecrated a Bishop. He had initially been very reluctant to accept such preferment and no further native Chinese became a Bishop until 1918. He was sympathetic towards Matteo ricci’s attempt to explain Christianity in Chinese terms and his toleration of the Confucian practice of honouring ancestors. This was to anticipate later missionary strategy, but was condemned by Pope Clement XI early in the eighteenth century.
